How do we use the new Learning and Development lights?

Introduction

All dioceses must plan for the full implementation of the new Safeguarding Learning and Development Framework from January 2022.

The original dashboards have four lights associated with the old Practice Guidance: Safeguarding Training and Development (2019).  These are being replaced by six new lights, one for each of the new learning pathways:

  • Basic Awareness Pathway
  • Foundation Pathway - available now
  • Leadership Pathway - available now
  • Parish Safeguarding Officer Induction Pathway
  • Domestic Abuse Pathway
  • Safer Recruitment and People Management Pathway

Each diocese has full control over when they choose to swich off the old dashboard lights, and switch on the new dashboard lights.

These new dashboard lights collect information from parishes regarding the numbers of people that need to complete each pathway.

Step 1 - Switch off the old lights

The original dashboards have four lights associated with the old practice guidance.

To switch these lights off:

  1. Go to https://tools.parishdashboards.org.uk/
  2. Sign in
  3. Select 'Settings' in the left-hand meu
  4. Open the 'Light switches' tool
  5. Switch off the four lights under the topic 'Training for Key Roles'

Please note that the above changes will only be implemented overnight.

Step 2 - Switch on the new lights

At present there are only two new lights, but soon there will be six.

  1. Open the 'Light switches' tool (see above)
  2. Switch on the lights under the topic 'Learning and Development'

Please note that the above changes will only be implemented overnight.

Step 3 - Customising the help information

As with all the dashboard lights, you can edit the blue help box at the bottom of the page.

For this, you need the 'Help text' tool, which can be found under 'Settings'.

If you get stuck, you can find an overview of all the tools in this short video...
https://www.safeguardingdashboards.org.uk/info/dashboard-tools/

Step 4 - Communication

The new lights will appear overnight.  It is then important that you inform dashboard owners about the changes, and also encourage them to answer the questions for the new dashboard lights.

You could say:

"The Church of England has a new Safeguarding Learning and Development Framework.  This must be implemented from January 2022 and, to help with this, some changes have been made to Safeguarding Dashboards.

The dashboard lights that related to the old training framework have now been removed.  These have been replaced by a new set of dashboard lights, which can be found in a new section called "Learning and Development."

The new lights ask questions about the numbers of people that need to complete each learning pathway.  Your answers to these questions will enable our diocesan safeguarding team to plan the number of courses that will be needed during the next three years.

I'd be very grateful if you could answer these questions as soon as possible."

Step 5 - Checking the data

You can view the answers submitted by each parish by using the 'Progress' tool.

To check this data:

  1. Go to https://tools.parishdashboards.org.uk/
  2. Sign in
  3. Select 'Data' in the left-hand meu
  4. Open the 'Progress' tool
  5. Select the relevant dashboard light (e.g. 'Leadership Pathway')
  6. Press the green 'Filter' button, and select 'Parishes'

You can download this data to a spreadsheet if you want.

It is worth contacting any parish that has entered an unusually high number, since this can skew the calculations in the Training Report (see below).

Step 6 - Requesting your Training Report

The Training Report estimates the total number of people that need to complete each pathway.  The report estimates the training requirements for your entire diocese by:

  • Using the actual numbers for parishes that have answered the questions
  • Using estimated numbers for the remaining parishes

The accuracy of the estimated numbers will increase as more parishes enter valid data.

To request your Training Report via email:

  1. Go to the dashboards (NOT the tools)  https://www.parishdashboards.org.uk/
  2. Sign in
  3. Go to your diocesan dashboard
  4. Press the 'Overview' tool (towards the top-left corner)
  5. Select 'Send me the Training Report' at the bottom of the page.

Please note that you can also request a Training Report for an archdeaconry or deanery.  Simply navigate to the required dashboard before pressing the 'Overview' button.  The report is also available to anyone who as access to these archdeaconry or deanery dashboards.
